ECT Development

Investing in Early Career Teachers. Developing Excellence. Retaining Talent.

The Why

At Exceed Learning Partnership, we believe that investing in teachers at the beginning of their careers is key to developing a strong, confident and sustainable teaching workforce.

We wanted to create an ECT experience that went beyond meeting the requirements of the Early Career Framework, providing consistent, high-quality support across our academies while recognising the individual needs of each teacher.

Our approach focuses on four key priorities: building community, professional development, teacher development and staff retention. We aim to connect ECT1s and ECT2s across Primary and Secondary settings, creating opportunities to share experiences, learn from one another and build professional networks.

By investing in our ECTs, we want to develop high-quality teachers who feel supported and valued, while encouraging talented colleagues to remain not only within the teaching profession, but within Exceed academies as they progress throughout their careers.

The How

We developed a Trust-wide ECT programme that combines consistent core training with ongoing, responsive support. ECTs access centralised Exceed training, alongside further professional development each term, with sessions linked to the key fundamentals of effective teaching and the needs identified across our academies.

Our approach is supported by a range of tools and processes, including observation tracking, termly report tracking, professional growth targets and a clear CPD timeline. We also provide report-writing support for Induction Tutors and undertake quality assurance visits to ensure that ECT provision is effective and consistent.

Understanding need is central to our approach. Baseline forms, post-training evaluations, feedback and data help us identify priorities and measure the impact of our provision. This allows us to respond quickly, provide targeted support and share practical “quick wins” that ECTs can apply directly in their classrooms.

The Impact

Our ECT programme is designed to create a measurable difference for teachers, schools and ultimately the pupils they teach. Through regular professional development, targeted support and a strong Trust-wide community, ECTs are developing their confidence, classroom practice and professional identity.

The combination of consistent systems and responsive support also enables us to identify where additional development is needed and ensure that no ECT is left without the guidance they require. Feedback from ECTs, Induction Tutors and academies helps us continually review and strengthen the programme.

We are also building a collection of ECT success stories, showcasing the experiences, achievements and professional journeys of our early career teachers. These stories demonstrate the impact of investing in our people and highlight how effective support can help teachers thrive.

Ultimately, our measure of success is not simply completing the ECT programme. It is seeing teachers develop, grow in confidence, enjoy their profession and choose to build their future within Exceed Learning Partnership.
